Introduction

If you want to succeed, you need to be able to business plan using goal setting and appropriate members of your team. Without goals you lack focus and direction. Goal setting and business planning not only allows you to take control of your direction; it also provides you a benchmark for determining whether you are actually succeeding.

Goal setting is important for both organisations and individuals. When you set goals, you make a plan for the future. You are keeping an Òeye on the prizeÓ by moving forward. As a leader you will need to be a visionary. You have probably heard that word many times but what does it mean? Having a vision means you have a picture of where you or your team are heading for in the future. Having a strong, clear vision is like having a good road map.

Once you have your vision, you must inspire your team to share your vision. By having a clear vision, talking about it plainly, and always attempting to be honest and fair, you will be on your way to gaining your teamsÕ trust, which is important when working towards your plan. People want to know that their efforts contribute to a bigger picture or goal.

To accomplish your teamsÕ goals, however, you need to know how to set them.

You canÕt simply say, ÒI wantÉÓ and expect it to happen. Goal setting is a process that starts with careful consideration of what you want your team to achieve, and ends with a lot of hard work to actually do it. In between there are some very well defined steps and knowing these steps will allow you to formulate goals that your team can accomplish.
